The story of Eumeralla Scout camp would have to start with the
store of one mans life, that being Harold Hurst more affectionately
known by most as 'Boss'. Boss has certainly left his mark. For
50 years 'Boss' was Scouting in Geelong. He was father to thousands
of boys and his influence on them was lasting. He gathered around
him a dedicated group in the early 1920's and inspired them to
assist him in his lifes work for the young people of the region.
'Boss' became interested in youth in the early stages of manhood,
being a leading figure in amateur athletics, boxing, rowing and
football. In 1923 'Boss' was requested to become a Scout Commissioner
and to develop the movement. In 1924 he took the Geelong contingent
to the Wembley Jamboree where he was presented to King George
V and Sir Robert, later Lord Baden Powell, Scouting's founder.
One of his first achievements was the establishment of the original
Camp Eumeralla on the banks of the Angelsea River.
"Anglesea Scout Camp - a famous boys vocational training
camp in the Otway Forest. A camp with a purpose. A camp with a
soul. Constructed by the boys themselves and not run for profit."
By 1946 the original Eumeralla had out grown its location, and
had been encroached upon by the township. A decision to sell was
made. Fate took a hand and the camp was unfortunately destroyed
by bushfire in that year.
In October 1946, Scouts began to carve out a new Eumeralla out
of virgin bush, about 1000 acres of crown land situated on the
coast, between Anglesea and Point Addis. 'Boss' saw the new Eumeralla
as a national park of Scouting youth and visualised it as the
site for a future world Jamboree.
Sadly Harold Hurst passed away on 6 August 1972, aged 84, after
a lengthy illness. Throughout the camp there are many memorials
to 'Boss' and his family. When he accepted his office as Commissioner
there were 2 scouting groups in Geelong. When he died there were
54 groups.
